You’re welcome to bring your own materials. Bring an easel, drawing board and brushes if you have them. We will be using a variety of media, and doing ad hock demos to help you along your way. Wear old clothes. Soft drinks and nibbles included. Our life model (Paul or John) will hold a long pose, and we take breaks to suit the model. It’s hard work holding a pose!

FAQ’s

I’ve never done a life class before, so don’t know what to expect. This is a relaxed and informal class. Students are supportive of each other, and you will get to see tutor demos and hands on instruction, but only if you need it. Pastels, paint and paper will be supplied.

Is the model nude? Yes, we have two male professional life models depending on the session date. This may feel a little strange at first, but that quickly turns to pure observation. At no point does a student or tutor touch the model or alter any drapery or clothing near to the model. Respect is paramount

Is there parking? Parking is free for users of the MMC. If the car park is full, please use the alternative car park on Little Lane behind the Mountsorrel Parish Rooms.

Can I bring my own easel and materials? Yes, you can. This will be very helpful I only have 6 portable easels and have no storage.

What materials are safe to use in this studio? To keep our space comfortable and accessible for everyone, please use water soluble materials, avoiding spray paints and solvents. Acrylics, pastels, pencils watercolour etc…are all allowable.

What will you supply? Student quality materials/equipment, such as waterpots, heavy cartridge paper, sugar paper, Seawhite pastels, Cass art, acrylic paint, compressed charcoal, Willow charcoal, putty rubbers, pencils, sharpeners, rubbers. Tea, coffee (decaf option)& milk (not plant based- it will be wasted)

Help, I don’t have an easel! You may request an easel and board by emailing info@nitanewman.art 48hrs prior to the session.

I have a table easel, can I work from a table? Yes you can! MMC has portable tables and chairs available.

What would be helpful to bring? This large space is not an art studio, so if you can provide an easel and board this would be EXTREMELY helpful. I have 6 – 7 travel easels and can access boards. Bring a watercolour palette, if that’s what you prefer/ or a flat board/palette for mixing acrylic paint. An A2 portfolio

Do you have disability access? How do we access the building? MMC level access is on the left of the building ( the Green Room entrance) for everyone. Please contact Nita Newman if you need a raised table for wheel chair accessibility on info@nitanewman.art so that I can make adjustments 48 hrs prior to arrival.

Can I leave my work with you? Unfortunately not. This is a shared space. I have to clear the space as if we never existed! Please ensure you have a portfolio at big enough for A2 sized work and it is dry enough before you exit the building at the end of the night.

Are there any demonstrations? Different people will have different requirements. I will do ad hock demos as required for whoever needs them! This allows for more experienced artists to just ‘get on with it’!

Is it messy? Yes, It can be! That depends on you and the materials you choose. You may decide you want to use gloves and an apron. Don’t come in your Sunday best!

How do I get to the MMC (Mountosrrel Memorial Centre) by car or bus ? By Car: (Sat nav) 105 Leicester Rd, Loughborough LE12 7DB – Parking is FREE Parking, alternative parking is on Little Lane, LE12 7BH. By Bus; take the 127 Arriva Bus that runs every 30 minutes that runs from Leicester to Mountsorrel, to Loughborough through to Shepshed.

How do I access the building? The class is accessed via the ‘Green Room’ on the far left side of the building. Press the Intercom button. If no answer call 07779 414598 and the host (Nita) will let you in. Access is level and you will go through two sets of double doors to access the studio space.

Do I have to show my work to other people? You are under no obligation to share if you don’t want to. You will always be asked if you are comfortable sharing your work. Sometimes the tutor will see something wonderful that you may not be aware of, and may want to show others as a learning opportunity, but ONLY if you are happy to share !

I’m new to life classes, and I’m worried I won’t be the right fit! It can be hard trying new things and getting used to new spaces, activities and people, but you will be soon feel at home in a down to earth atmosphere with supportive like minded people. Whatever your goals are we can help you with them together.
